I'd imagine that there are probably some people who don't approve all that much of American-born students at Hogwarts, especially some of Neil's fellow Slytherins. Neil's constantly getting into fights over it, but Adam's like, "Eh, whatever," except on those days when it really gets to him. When things really get to him, it's scary.
Hagrid totally made the table as a surprise. And Adam never expected to become the school's biggest unity advocate--it just happened.
